The Committee on Government Operations, was established in 1952, renaming the Committee on Expenditures in the Executive Departments, which had been established in 1927 to consolidate various Committees that oversaw how taxpayer monies were spent. The new Committee had an expanded remit to scrutinise the activities of Government at all levels to ensure their efficiency and value for money. The Committee later took on the functions of the Committee on Post Office and Civil Service and the Committee on the District of Columbia.
