The following description was provided by James Gardiner: "English POWs are shown in an extremely intimate tableau, as two canoodling couples. There is closer physical contact between these men than in other WW1 photograph in [the James Gardiner] collection, and the homosexual implications, from their attitude and expression, seem inescapable."
