    TO THE LORD PROVOST AND MANAGERS OE THE Jlogal Jn'ftrmnrg. My Lord Provost and Gentlemen, Dr. Keith, Senior Surgeon to the Royal Infirmary, has informed me of his intention to retire from the Surgeoncy of the above Institution. I beg to offer myself as a Candidate for the vacancy which will thus be created ; and, if you do me the honour to elect me to the post I seek, I shall at once resign the appointment I presently hold under you. I shall not re-issue the Testimonials on which you elected me to the Ophthalmic Surgeonship. Since that situation was conferred upon me in 1868, I have done my utmost, both as regards the patients and students, to discharge its duties to the best of my power, and should equally strive to fulfil those of Surgeon. Since commencing practice, my studies and attention have been directed chiefly to Surgery. I have had occasion to perform most of the major surgical operations, and have frequently assisted at almost all of them. I would ask leave to refer you to the following Publications by me on Surgical subjects — 1st.—On the Comparative Strength of Arteries secured by Ligature, Acupressure, and Torsion. (Lancet, 17th April, 1869, and New York Medical Gazette). 2d.—Case of Excision of the Calcaneum. (British Medical Journal, 8th May, 1869). 3d.—On Extra-Capsular Fracture of the Femur. (Medical Times and Gazette, 15th May, 1869). 4th-—On a new operation for removal of Posterior Adhesion of the Iris. (Medical Times and Gazette, 28th May, 1870).
