Biographical note
Between February and April 1958, the BBC screened a series of ten medical documentaries under the title "Your Life in Their Hands". Filming took place in hospitals around the country and both doctors and patients were interviewed. The series provoked serious controversy, particularly within the medical establishment. It was heavily criticised in the pages of the BMJ. Michael Essex-Lopresti was invited to review the series for The Lancet, but his review was never published.
