Described by William Lilly as "of a middle stature, broad forehead, beetle-brow'd, thick shoulders, flat nosed, full lips, down-look'd, black curling stiff hair, splay-footed", dishonest, and "much addicted to debauchery, and then very abusive and quarrelsom, seldom without a black eye, or one mischief or another" (Oxford dictionary of national biography)

"Lord Cardiff", mentioned in the lettering as the owner of the drawing, was John Stuart, first marquess of Bute (1744–1814), who was created Baron Cardiff on 20 May 1776, i.e. less than two weeks before the publication date of this print
