Description

Centre, the basilica, with the Cistercian monastery in wings to the right and the left of the façade of the basilica. There are steps up to the entrance: bollards are placed on the street adjacent to the bottom step. In the foreground, left, a pair of monks; centre a group of exhausted pilgrims arriving to see the remains of the Cross and gesticulating towards the basilica in excitement. People are begging in several places on the steps and around the entrance. Right, a modern building incorporating the Aurelian wall. Far left, a ruined Roman building
