About this work

Description

Account and recipe book, from the estate papers of Swythamley Hall, N. Staffordshire, maintained by different individuals over several years. At either end of the volume are brief accounts and notes, including a "Malt Book" for 1800, the pages being printed with columns to assist in the keeping of accounts; the bulk of the volume (ff. 3-18r), however, has been used to record veterinary recipes (entered from the back of the volume, the other way up), in various hands. Recipes include those "For a cow week and lost her appetite", "For the rot in sheep", "For a cough in a horse", "For a green wound made with a stake or anything else in cattle", etc. 18ff., marbled card cover.
