About this work

Description

Presented by Paul Kenyon, this harrowing undercover documentary looking at the systematic physical and psychological abuse of patients with severe learning difficulties at Winterbourne View. Former senior nurse at Winterbourne View, Terry Bryan, wrote a report to the Care Quality Commission naming the key abusive staff at the home but it was ignored. The Panorama staff sent in Joe, an undercover reporter posing as a care worker, who recorded shocking scenes of abuse and torture, particularly of two patients, Simone and Simon. Psychologists analyse the footage and describe how the treatment will be affecting the patients. Also interviewed are senior executives for Castlebeck, who run Winterbourne View and other care homes and Ian Biggs, head of the Care Quality Commission who failed to pick up on the problems at Winterbourne View. As a result of the programme, thirteen members of staff were suspended from work and await police investigation.
