Description
The sitter was born in Leighton, Yorkshire, to a puritan family. In April 1652 she had a form of catalepsy for seventeen days from which she awoke seized with religious revelation; a similar attack from 8 September to 7 December had no such effect. She was promoted by her family and friends as 'the wise virgin'. (DNB)
