    N this booklet there is no attempt at diagnosis, which requires the observation of a skilled, experienced and qualified practitioner, and no attempt is made to induce the live stock owner to dispense with the services of a Veterinary Surgeon—on the contrary, emphasis is laid on the necessity of seeking the advice of a veterinarian. It must be recognised, however, that there are many mild ailments which can be attended to by the farmer or experienced man, and also that many farms are so situated that even when it has been decided to call in a Veterinary Surgeon, some considerable time must elapse before his arrival. ; Humanity demands that some ease must be afforded to the suffering animal, and self-interest dictates that some attempt shall be made to prevent what is probably only a simple ailment developing into a serious condition. The early and proper treatment of what is apparently a simple cold will often prevent pleurisy or pneumonia. - Hence, frequent mention is made of the general lines upon which treatment is usually given, even where we advise calling in a Veterinary Surgeon. The general rules to be observed when an animal first shows signs of illness are : (1) Separate the animal from the rest of the herd, so as to prevent anything of an infectious or contagious nature infecting others. (2) See that the animal is housed in a dry, sheltered, warm building, and made comfortable with plenty of warm bedding. As a general rule during winter, the animal should be kept indoors. In the summer, however, in the absence of feverish conditions, it is usually wise to let the animal out during the middle of the day, if necessary providing it with a warm wrap or cover. The diet should be of a light, nourishing nature, containing a good proportion of gruels, mashes and bran, with a little grass and cut hay; a little Boots Iodized Mineral Salts being added to any dry food that is given. In stomach and digestive disturbances, it is usually well to start with a dose of aperient medicine. Boots Cleansing and Evacuant Drench, given in gruel, with or without a pound of treacle, is very suitable. In feverish conditions, however, whilst it is necessary that the bowels should be open, the laxative employed should be of a mild nature to avoid undue purging. In such cases half doses of the drench will be sufficient. Where there is a high temperature and other signs of feverishness, early treatment will include the giving of Boots Fever Drink, and this should be repeated night and morning or three times a day if necessary until the fever subsides, or until such time as a Veterinary Surgeon can take over the case. The attendant should make it his duty to visit sick animals after he has attended to the rest of the herd, so that there is no danger of his carrying infection. As an extra precaution, he should thoroughly disinfect his hands, boots, etc., before visiting other animals. . The use of a reliable disinfectant should be included in the measures taken on the first outbreak of a complaint, whether it affects several members of a herd or only one animal.
