This programme commemorates the seventieth anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima by the USA in 1945. Medical doctor Shuntaro Hida, who survived the attacks, recounts his experiences with presenter Ruth Evans. Dr Hida recounts his movements up to the moment of the explosion and describes the immediate physical sensations caused by the bomb’s impact. Audio clips are played of President of the USA Harry Truman announcing the bombing. Dr Hida describes his immediate movements after the bomb hit, including his journey to the main hospital where he treated injured and dying bomb victims. He discusses his numerous arrests by the USA, which were an attempt to stop Hida publicising the effects of the atomic bomb on Japanese people. Dr Hida voices concerns about the ongoing effects of the atomic bomb on the health of Hiroshima’s younger generations.
