About this work
Description
Looks at the history of animals in medical research and reviews the laws concerning the use of laboratory animals. Enumerates the medical breakthroughs resulting from animal tests - smallpox and polio vaccines, advances in heart and abdominal surgery, treatments for leukaemia and tuberculosis and a reduction in infant mortality. Argues that while in vitro tests can replace the use of live animals in many procedures, they cannot show the effects of drugs on the whole body.
