Two men in an art gallery are being shown a painting by the proprietor while another man with a paint brush in his hand hides behind the picture. Etching by Phiz (Hablot K. Browne), 1845.

The scene is not described in Lever's corresponding chapter: Browne has interpreted the subject independently. The man behind the canvas seems to wear Scottish dress. He has a bucket of varnish: he may be the restorer or the painter of the supposed Rembrandt painting

The painting's frame bears a label "Rembrant". A notice in the left background reads "Pictures cleaned, lined, restored, bought, sold, and exchanged". Another painting on the right is labelled "Sir Joshua Reynolds" and "Original Snake in the grass", referring to a painting by Reynolds in the Sir John Soane Museum since 1837. A teapot is labelled "Teapot of Benvenuto Shell-Ninny" (Cellini), and an antique helmet is labelled with indistinct words
