About this work

Description

3D model of a medieval human mandible (lower jaw bone). To image the specimen, 4800 virtual x-ray slices were captured using a micro CT scanner. An image was taken every 0.15 degree for a full 360 degree rotation. Shown here is a rendering of the path of the scan as the image rotates through 360 degrees. This rendering produced the figure of eight appearance seen here. Colour textures were applied to highlight the teeth (brown) and bone (blue). Whilst aesthetically interesting, this type of rendering is not used for scientific analysis. See B0009416 for an image of a correctly rendered mandible.
