Biographical note
Addison, Thomas (1795-1860), physician, born near Newcastle upon Tyne. He studied medicine at Edinburgh University and then moved to London, where he set up his private practice. The work for which he is best known was when he described a peculiar anaemia, later named Addison's anaemia. His health began to deteriorate in 1859 and this made him depressed. He committed suicide in June 1860. A full description of his life and work is to be found in the Dictionary of National Biography.
