About this work
Description
Jessica is a healthy 3.5 -year-old but for the last 2 years has been suffering from extremely disturbed nights. Sometimes she can be up for 5-6 hours each night talking and acting out what's happening in her dreams. Her mother, Tanya, thinks she sleeps around 3-4 hours a day and this lack of deep sleep is beginning to affect her health. Jessica is taken to the Sleep Disorders Centre at Evelina Children's Hospital in London where child sleep specialist Paul Gringras runs a series of tests on her to establish what the cause of her sleeplessness is and to ascertain what effects it is having on her health. Gringas discovers from reading the patterns of her brain activity overnight that Jess is actually asleep and is acting out elaborate games using eidetic imagery - a childhood developmental stage in which a child is able to create a 3-dimensional world in which to play. By changing her bedtime routine quite drastically, Jess is finally able to sleep through the night.
