About this work

Description

Steve Humphries looks at the latest research into paedophilia. We find out how prevalent internet grooming is when detective Jonathan Taylor logs onto a chat site in the guise of a 13-year-old girl. Sarah Forsythe tells Humphries about how she has suffered a lifetime of abuse beginning with her father, she is now training to be a social worker. Sarah Goode is at the forefront of research into childhood sexual abuse and believes that one in every six children will be sexually abused before the age of sixteen. As part of her research she attempted to contact paedophiles who are not registered as offenders to understand their motives better. She believes that there are a large amout of paedophiles who are struggling with their desires and who would not actually ever enact any of them. Humphries meets 'Eddie', a paedophile who has had no criminal convictions but feels he can't control his sexual attractions and would prefer to be helped rather than villainised. We look back in history to the 1970s when the group Paedophile Information Exchange (PIE) attempted to get paedophilia accepted and shared information about 'available' children. We hear from a man who was the victim of paedophilia at boarding school over several years. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s people became more aware of child pornography and paedophiles living in the community were villified and forced to move. Journalist and writer Tim Tate suggests that this made the situation worse as paedophiles went underground and could no longer be tracked. In Germany paedophiles are encouraged to come out and seek help so that they don't act on their desires and the programme ends by suggesting this should be the way forwards for all countries.
