About this work

Description

Full colour, chromolitho poster advertising the appearance of Franz Winkelmeier (who was 8 feet 9 inches tall) in some sort of variety show at the London Pavilion in Piccadilly, probably in 1887. Born on 27 April 1860 in Lengau, Austria, Winkelmeier was advertised as the tallest man who ever existed. He toured Europe, having previously "created... a sensation at the Folies Bergeres, Paris" and was introduced to Queen Victoria in June 1887. He died 2 months later on August 24th. The image shows Winkelmeier in top hat and tails, right arm outstretched, standing next to a royal guardsman and a scale marked off in feet.
