About this work

Description

What is a designer baby and do we have the power to create one today? This programme looks at the implications behind the genetic manipulation of embryos and includes the opinions of experts both for and against new technologies which might allow us to select desirable features for our offspring. We hear from mother Phillippa Handyside about the multiple miscarriages she had before allowing her eggs to be genetically modified and subsequently giving birth to a healthy boy. However this is not the kind of case of genetic modification that worries people in the way a parent's being able to choose their child's eye colour. Ultimately, what would the future be like if all our children were never ill, of genius mentality and physically perfect?
