That convinced asyour Memorialists are, that private inter- eft fhould not be fet in opposition to public good, they would meet the impending calamity with firmnefs, and bear it with fortitude, were it true that their occupations were productive of ficknefs or diffufed peftilencc through the air of their neighbourhood. Nay, if this was the Qafc, fo far are your Memorialists from wifhing to continue as they are from fclfifh motives, that rather than poifon a ftreet or a neighbourhood, they would of their own accord either re- move or fhut up their works. That believing there is a mifconccption concerning th« nature of the vapours of their manufactories, and that ow- ing to feme remote analogies, thefe exhalations, though in- nocent, have been clafTed with others which are indeed noxious in a high degree ; and confident at the lame time, that the Legifiature are willing to investigate the fub- jeet to the bottom, and fcarch out the whole truth ; your Memorialists crave pcrmiffion to be heard on the merits of their appliotion by a candid enquiry into facts. That as by rcafon of the rcmotenefs of the Legifiature from their place of refidence, they were not apprifed of what was doing foon enough to make oppofition to the bill during its progrefs, they are defirous of exhibiting at this time fuch evidence, to (hew the harmlefs nature of their occupation, as if, had it been poffible to have produced in due fcafon, would, they trust, have fatisfied the Legifiature that it was fuperfiuous or ncedlefs to have included thera within the act.
