Biographical note

Aikin, Arthur (1773-1854), natural scientist and author, born in Lancashire. Aikin's became interested in geology in 1795, when he made a trip to Wales. In 1807, Aikin became one of the founding members of the Geological Society of London. The plant Aikinia was named after him by Nathaniel Wallich (1784-1854) in 1832. In 1843, the mineral Aikinite was also named after him by E. J. Chapman. He died in 1854. A full description of his life and work is to be found in the Dictionary of National Biography.
