Attend a screening of a nine-minute film featuring support workers, learning disabled and autistic people discussing their relationships in a selection of moving portraits and extracts from conversations. Support is a vital part of independence for many learning disabled and autistic people, and cuts to this kind of care are detrimental to their wellbeing. The film asks what ‘care’ really means and who benefits from these relationships.

‘Who Cares?’ was created by Catherine Long and Felipe Pagini, with participants and support workers from Heart n Soul’s creative arts programme ‘Allsorts’.

The film will be followed by a conversation with those involved in the project to discuss these issues further. The film will be subtitled and the conversation afterwards will be speech-to-text transcribed. You will have a chance to ask your questions if you like.

Location

We’ll be in the Henry Wellcome Auditorium. To get there, take the stairs or the lift down to level −1. The auditorium is fitted with a hearing loop.

Place not guaranteed

Booking a ticket for a free event does not guarantee you a place. You should aim to arrive 15 minutes before the event is scheduled to start to claim your place. If you do not arrive on time, your place may be given to someone on the waiting list.

Catherine Long

Artist

Catherine Long is an artist who is curious about the spaces in between people; places of connection. She utilises her own embodied knowledge and life experience of marginalisation in creative ways, particularly with others whose voices are often dismissed or ignored, proposing that they be listened to, heard and valued.

Dora Whittuck

Dr. Dora Whittuck is a senior clinical psychologist.  She works in a health and social care team for people with learning disabilities and autism, and is a core team member of the Heart n Soul at The Hub residency at the Wellcome Collection.

Heart n Soul at The Hub

Collaborator

Award-winning creative arts company and charity Heart n Soul are residents of The Hub from 2018 to 2020. Their research project is led by people with learning disabilities and autistic people, and is about exploring the value of difference and questioning what is ’normal’.

Jess Mabel Jones is a theatre-maker, performer and puppeteer whose fun and accessible work strives to incite change. She is a support worker and a creative collaborator to neurodivergent artists at Access All Areas. Jess is a relaxed performance advocate and co-created the multi-award winning Backstage in Biscuit Land, with Touretteshero.
